Bonnie Prince Charlie's Retreat.
With care choose which side of this road to travel a short distance, to get past the missing pavement. On the first bit of pavement look back at the line of Poplars and across the road to the last bit of visible old road.
You can go back the same way, or follow this addition route into the Markeaton Park.
Stay on the right until you come to a short wall with an Oak tree. Just enjoy the walk, before the wall and Oak some fine English countryside views.
At the wall, stop. Look over the wall, this is the old Mackworth road, only shallow depression now. Now turn to look over the road; two field boundaries one with a Church Spire -
Continue on past the Crematorium, right after the Car Park turn right into the farm road and before the field gate turn left into the wood.
This is a narrow Wood in an “L” shape you can see the sides all the time, in season the Bluebells are good. Walk on as pleases you until the little wooden bridge. Cross the bridge this is your right turn, walk on.
Stay toward the middle and in a short while a brick structure with Ivy on it appears in your way. Go to the left of the structure and exit the Wood into the Markeaton Park. The structure is the Portico of the Markeaton Hall, it was moved to make way for frontage improvements and has now out lived the Hall. [Here is a picture, look lower right]
Enjoy the Markeaton Park...
